Coming
From Overseas?
Not
being most international travel itineraries, Taiwan
is a surprise to many visitors, with its vibrant
religions, culture, cuisine and breath-taking
scenery. While, in the opinion of most Taiwanese
staunchly, not part of neighboring China, Taiwan
retains many of the genuine characteristics lost
to China’s Cultural Revolution. A blend
of Chinese, Taiwanese, Aborigine, Hakka and colonial-era
Japanese cultures allowed to flourish in a free
democratic (and sometimes chaotic) society.
Getting here.
We recommend you fly in to nearby Kaohsiung (pronounced
Gau-shung, Taiwan’s second-largest city) International
Airport (KHH). From there, we can bring you either straight
into the countryside, for adventure; or to culture-rich
Tainan City for a bit of sight-seeing/acclimatization.
Most passport-holders from western countries qualify
for a 30 day visa-free entry otherwise apply in advance
at a Taiwan representative office. Check here
for details
We can help arrange your ground transport/accommodation,
and point you in the right direction for visiting the
many sights, whether here in the historic former capital,
or in Taipei with the world’s tallest building
and the National Palace Museum. Prices quoted on this
website are in Taiwan Dollars (1 US$ is worth approx
33 NT$), and do not include transport to Taiwan.
Taiwan’s climate is subtropical with distinct
differences North and South .The average yearly temperature
at altitudes above 3,500 meters is 5 degrees Celsius;
above 2,500 meters it is 10 degrees C. Annual rainfall
is 3,000 to 4,700 mm, with the rainy (rainier really,
most days are still dry) season lasting from May to
August. Typhoons can arrive July to September. While
any time is probably fine, the best period to climb
the mountains is during the dry season, which lasts
from October through April. From January to March, snow
on the upper reaches of the more northern mountains
can make travel problematic. When looking at statistics
from the Central
Weather Bureau pay attention to ‘rainfall’
in ‘Tainan, Kaohsiung, Alishan (resort in southern/central
mountains), and Yushan (weather station at 3800m).
